Starting something new, like physical therapy at home services, can be really intimidating for your elderly family member. What can help is to understand what types of situations this therapy can help with and how it might work so that your elderly family member can relax and get the help that she needs.
Understanding how physical therapy at home can help your senior can go a long way toward helping her to feel less nervous about the idea.
Fall Prevention
One big reason to encourage your senior to consider physical therapy is the emphasis on fall prevention. Falls are a serious issue for aging adults, and physical therapists help your elderly family member to understand what can contribute to a fall, whether that means environmental factors or health issues that she can do something about.
Balance Training
If your elderly family member’s balance isn’t as good as it used to be, physical therapists will work with her to improve it. That might mean gradually walking more, using assistive devices as needed, and engaging in personalized plans that address her needs.
Muscle Strengthening
Stronger muscles are something that can help your aging family member to live her best life. As she ages, it’s easier for her body to lose muscle tone and that affects everything from balance to stamina. Your senior can gradually rebuild some of the muscles that she has lost, improving her quality of life at the same time and possibly reducing pain.
Hot and Cold Therapy
Another method for reducing pain involves hot and cold therapy. This involves using different types of heat, including wet and dry versions, along with ice packs to reduce pain levels. Hot and cold therapy can be very helpful with arthritis and other types of chronic pain.
Gait Training
As your senior ages, it’s possible that she has unconsciously made changes to how she walks, which is called her gait. Often this is to accommodate pain or injuries and issues with her gait can make it more difficult for your senior to walk. Physical therapy can work toward improving your senior’s gait and helping her to walk more easily.
Education
The more that you and your aging family member know about her health issues and how those conditions affect her life, the better prepared you’ll be for what happens next. Physical therapists can offer a lot of education that you and your senior can use to make decisions now and in the future.
Personalized Exercises
Every senior’s needs are different, even if they have similar health issues. A physical therapist assesses everything that is going on for your elderly family member and puts together a plan of exercises and tools that are going to help her the most with what she finds challenging.
Assistive Devices and Tools
Your elderly family member may not relish the idea of using assistive devices, like a walker. But the reality is that if a walker helps her to be more mobile while also being safer, then it’s a tool that can help her to improve her life. As she grows stronger, she may not need the walker any longer, but it’s there for her for as long as she does need it.

Beth’s inspired her to always desire great care for seniors and has been working and advocating for seniors since 1988. She earned a degree in Special Education from the Pennsylvania State University and a juris doctorate from Hofstra University. Beth became an elder care attorney to advocate for both the elderly and people living with handicaps before started a home care agency in 2003.
Her passion has always been to ensure that her clients receive better care than her grandparents had, and she works tirelessly to make sure that happens. Her motto and belief has always been and will always be that she (and her staff) will care for your family as we would our own!
For years, Beth has “thought outside the box” and imagined a company that could supplement the in-home care that many seniors need. In-home care provides assistance with the activities of daily living, but many seniors are homebound for a variety of reasons: their physical condition, not being able to drive, mobility concerns, or because they believe that being at home (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic) was the safest place to be.
During the pandemic, Beth made the decision to launch Max Health and Wellness. She envisioned the need to provide additional in-home services to those who need them, specifically therapeutic solutions to create wellness and self-care experiences for seniors and others. These services will range from clinical therapy services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, mental health counselling, non-medical massage therapy and reflexology, nutritional counseling, and at-home salon/spa services such as therapeutic facial and hair styling.
Beth’s goal is that all of the health and wellness services offered by Max Health and Wellness will MAXIMIZE the quality of life and well-being of seniors throughout the state of New Jersey. She looks forward to having you experience our concierge therapeutic services and treatments.
